Hail! Hail! The
Gang's All Here
The 1973 Butlins Beaver Club Redcoat Team.
L-R: Uncle Pete, Auntie Barbara, Uncle Ray, and Aunty Eve
The little boy pictured front centre is Peter Steele,
who wrote to me as follows:
"I was a 10 year-old in 1973 and remember vividly the
children's entertainers -
Ray King, Uncle Pete, Aunty Barbara (who I had a massive crush on!) and
Aunty Eve.
They made a massive impression on me, during what was my first Butlin's
holiday."
If you read this, Auntie Barbara, please get in touch
with little Peter - he's sixty now!

These photographs
come under the title "Children's
Games," although
maybe the one on the right should come under "Adult Games."

Chief
Redcoat Norman encouraging these boys, by telling them the winner will
get to see Aunty Eve's knickers.

He's not the Chief Redcoat
- He's a very naughty boy!

Uncle Ray
reckons, when you've got so many children to keep on eye on, you can't
beat a bird's-eye view.

This looks
like just another ramble, but look closely and you'll see that some of
the children are
dressed as pirates, ready to track down the infamous CAPTAIN BLOOD -
who, apparently,
had stolen all the cutlery from the dining room. (And there's me
thinking it was the campers!)

Just to say, those spots in the sky
are the carriages on the overhead chairlift.

If "The Old
Woman Who Lived in a Shoe" thought
she had a problem with too many kids, she should have
tried working just one day in the Children's Theatre.
|
Uncle Ray enthralling the kids -- not just for one hour, but six days a week. What a talent.

Here's what Aunty Eve
had to tell me about the
two photos above:
"I have some great
pictures of the kids in
the children's theatre all crammed together 3 on a seat! It would not
be
allowed nowadays. Also the seats were theatre tip-up seats, and some of
the
smaller children would kneel on them and then get their legs trapped
when
the seat tipped up. They didn't complain until the end of the show when
they
couldn't get out of their seat!"
"We have some funny memories of
some of the
things that happened in the kids theatre e.g. the kids laughing so much
the
little ones would wet themselves and the wee would run down the raked
floor
and end up in a pool in front of the stage."
I've got news for you, Aunty Eve,
the same kids
are still doing that, only now it's in an old folks home!
