GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART

aka: GOODNIGHT CAMPERS

AL BOWLLY - BUTLINS CLACTON and SKEGNESS 1938

In 1938 Al Bowlly was lead singer with the Lew Stone Orchestra,
who played short spells at both Butlins Clacton and Skegness.
Every night they signed off with "GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART."

To hear AL BOWLLY sing "GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART"

CLICK 'Play' triangle.

It's my theory that the song proved so popular, Billy Butlin instructed it to be used every night, on every camp, from then on in. But, with the proviso that the words be rewritten to customise it for Butlins only.
Hence - "GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART" became "GOODNIGHT CAMPERS."

As I say: "That's my theory." If you know differently, please let me know.

Below are the lyrics from both versions, from which you will note that
the Butlins' version is rather less romantic.
For a bit of fun, play the above track, then sing-along using the words below.

SINGALONG

GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART

GOODNIGHT CAMPERS

Goodnight Sweetheart, all my prayers are for you.

Goodnight Sweetheart, I'll be watching o'er you.

Tears and parting, may make us forlorn.

But with the dawn, a new day is born.

So I'll say goodnight Sweetheart,

sleep will banish sorrow.

Goodnight Sweetheart, till we meet tomorrow.

Dreams enfold you,

in them, dear, I'll hold you. So ...

Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight.

(Musical Interlude) (Repeat last verse)

Goodnight Campers, I can see you yawning.

Goodnight Campers, see you in the morning.

You must cheer up, or you'll soon be dead

For I've heard it said, that folks die in bed!

o-o-0-o-o

So I'll say, Goodnight Campers,

Don't sleep in your braces.

Goodnight Campers, soak your teeth in Jeyes's.

Drown your sorrows,

Bring the bottles back tomorrow,

Goodnight Campers, Goodnight.
